Kangaroo Island

Where Australia comes alive

Visit this amazing animal kingdom. Discover the kangaroos, koalas, wallabies, echidnas, birds and endangered Australian sea lions that live free and wild on this island home.

Kangaroo Island is Australian nature and wildlife at its very best.

Native Australian wildlife thrives on Kangaroo Island. More than two-thirds of the island is made up of national parks and wildlife reserves.

The island is free of mainland pest species such as rabbits and foxes, and has a population of just 4500 people. That's less than 3 people per square mile!

Native Wildlife

Echidna, Kangaroo Island

Kangaroo Island is a natural sanctuary for native Australian animals, including its own kangaroo species, a sub-species of echidna, a large colony of endangered Australian sea lions, and an astounding 267 recorded bird species.

Koalas also thrive on KI, as does the Tammar Wallaby which is drastically declining in numbers on the mainland. You might also be lucky enough to glimpse some rarer animals like the platypus, Glossy Black-cockatoo and the Southern Brown Bandicoot. Between May and September, you may even see Southern Right Whales on their annual migration to their breeding grounds in the warmer South Australian waters.

Increase your chances of seeing and interacting with these animals by joining a local tour. Small group 4WD style tours are available, as are marine tours where you can swim with dolphins, or quad bike tours through the bush. There are many options available to get you close to the wildlife on Kangaroo Island.

Stunning scenery

Remarkable Rocks, Flinders Chase National Park, Kangaroo Island

Explore the rugged coastal cliffs, sheltered bays cupped between steep headlands, vast native bushland and rolling hills of farmland.

In the south-west corner at Flinders Chase National Park, be awed by two of Australia’s most fascinating coastal landmarks, the Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch.

The numerous beaches of the 336-mile coastline are all but deserted – unless of course, you count the kangaroos, sea lions and sea birds of course!

Gourmet Produce and Island Wines

Kangaroo Island honey

Kangaroo Island boasts a fascinating food and wine story.

The pristine environment allows for the highest quality produce farmed and created by some of Australia’s most innovative producers.

Eat your way across the island, and feast on organic lamb, pure-strain Ligurian honey, fresh seafood including juicy marron, abalone and oysters, and sublime sheep’s cheese. Wash it down with an Island cool-climate wine or even a locally-distilled gin.
