Our very own species of kangaroo, plus little penguins, wallabies, sea lions, dolphins, koalas, echidnas, possums, goannas and abundant bird life all call Kangaroo Island home. It’s amazing there’s any room for people!
Meet the locals
Kangaroo Island is the best place in Australia to see wildlife in the wild, so set aside plenty of time.
During the day, head to Seal Bay to meet our Australian sea lions. Just up the road at Admirals Arch, watch the fur seals laze around on the rocks and frolic in the pounding surf. Play “spot the koala” at Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary.
There’s more to see after dark, with tours to check out wallabies, possums and kangaroos. Don’t miss the little penguins at the Kangaroo Island Penguin Centre. (Please contact the tour operator as some tours may not be running at certain times of the year).
Food and wine
Kangaroo Island’s locals have done their bit to keep you well fed and watered. The wines keep improving and your taste buds will be amazed at what the distillers have created. Kangaroo Island honey is from unique Kangaroo Island bees. Descendants from Ligurian bees and disease free. Many businesses are family-owned, so you can expect warm and friendly service.
With so much spectacular wildlife, it’s only natural Kangaroo Island is a special place to live. Pristine beaches surround Kangaroo Island and quite often, there’s hardly anyone else around.
National parks cover a third of Kangaroo Island. Flinders Chase is home to Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch; it’s Kangaroo Island’s biggest park.
If the cliff-tops views aren’t enough, climb one of Kangaroo Island’s historic lighthouses; Cape du Couedic, Cape Willoughby and Cape Borda.
“Summit” the Little Sahara sand dunes or discover underground caves that feel more like cathedrals.
