Seal Bay Beach Walk

It's iconic!

Kangaroo Island is a world-famous destination filled with wildlife unique to Australia.

Seal Bay Conservation Park, Kangaroo Island, South Australia

One of the island’s most spectacular sights is the colony of Australian sea lions at beautiful Seal Bay. Thanks to the rangers of the Seal Bay Conservation Park, you can walk among them.

Walk with sea lions

Begin your experience in the visitor centre; a place to learn about the colony with plenty of hands-on exhibits. It’s a great place to enjoy the view down between the limestone headlands onto the white beach and turquoise seas.

Walk the 800 metre (2400 feet) wooden boardwalk (keep looking down, you might see the animals asleep just under your feet!). Take a tour with a small group guided by a ranger. Stand on the sand and see the animals interacting with each other (often with pups), returning from the shallows or sleeping after a long night of fishing out at sea. Learn about their behaviour on a half hour tour; photography is perfectly okay (If you’ve got a zoom lens, bring it for some amazing close-ups!).

Flinders Chase National Park

Head west and you’ll reach Flinders Chase National Park. Take the boardwalk to viewing platforms of Admiral’s Arch (an amazing natural rock arch formed over thousands of years) and see a colony of New Zealand fur seals.

Kangaroo Island is famous for being a wildlife refuge where native Australian animals have flourished. Keep looking among the eucalypt canopies, in the bushland and on the paddocks for kangaroos, wallabies, koalas and a huge variety of bird life.

Book it in!

If you want a close up encounter with sea lions, you’ll need a guide. Here's a selection.
